Chapter 17 and 18 summary

Brian works to gather more firewood and restore his shelter back to its original form. He was so exhausted from a long day of hard work, that he lies down to go to sleep when it comes to mind that the survival pack that the pilot had mentioned could still be in the plane, and perhaps he could access it. He starts to wonder what it could contain, Brian hopes that he will find tools or food, and decides to try and find it the following day. Brian falls asleep with the picture of the tail of the plane still in his mind. He wakes up the next morning and eats some fish to gain a little energy for his project and reasons that a raft would be the best method to get to the plane. Finding that the raft is going to be very difficult, Brian needed to find a way to attach the logs together. After many attempts and now frustrated, Brian entwines branches into the logs to hold them together. Moving the raft presents another challenge that will take time, and as nightfall approaches, Brian decides to go back to his shelter for the night and try again the next day. Brian sensed fall in the air on this glorious night in the woods. In the morning, he sets to get to the plane on his raft. Attaching the raft to the plane, Brian shutters as it occurs to him that he could possibly see the pilot down underwater. Angered by his inability to access the inside of the plane, Brian hits it with his fist and the aluminum covering opens. Using his  hatchet to cut through the rest of the sections, Brian is hacking away at a furious pace when he suddenly drops the hatchet and it slowly falls to the bottom of the lake. After a few tries, Brian finally succeeds in picking the hatchet up from the bottom, having barely enough air in his lungs to return to the surface. He continues to cut into the plane and swims down to retrieve the survival pack. On his way up he sees the pilot's head, the flesh had been eaten away by fish. Traumatized, Brian gets sick in the water and, struggling to free the pack from the plane, comes up to the surface. Exhausted from his efforts, Brian drags the survival pack back to his shelter and falls into a deep sleep

“What is a summary” summary

What is a summary? a brief statement including the main points of something. For example, writing a review for a book, you must include the most important plot points to write a "summary" so you can help your reader understand the main idea without reading the book. and that's what a summary is.

Chapter 15 and 16 summary

While in the woods, Brian measures time by events he experiences rather than by civil measures of time, in fact he marks the passing days on a rock close to the shelter. His actual sense of time, nonetheless, revolves around events such as the day of First Meat. Surviving off Fish and berries, Brian craving food he tries to catch fool birds, he has a difficult time. These birds tend to fly away at the last second and are hard to spot. Brian starts to train his eyes to see the bids, he also realized that he needed to put some work into his weapons. He figures out a system to catch the birds at the last minute and he catches his first meat. Brian creates something so that he can rotate the chicken over the fire. He sits there waiting and then he finally feasts on his meal.
Brian proudly recalls the big events since the plane crash, which he calls "First Days." For example, on "First Arrow Day" he had successfully constructed a straight-shooting arrow, and on "First Rabbit Day"it was his first rabbit he killed, using similar methods as he had used to kill the foolbird. He alternates between fool birds and rabbits, so he is able to satisfy himself with meat that is good . In time he became very good at catching foolbirds, he even caught one of the birds with his bare hands. While washing his hands in the lake, he feels as if something is there and turns around just in time to face a huge moose. The moose attacks him, throwing him into the water, thrashing him around, and badly hurting his ribs and his shoulder. Retrieving his bow, spear, and foolbird from the water's edge, Brian, in enormous pain, attempts to make sense of the attack before falling asleep. A far-off roar awakens Brian in the middle of the night. It was a tornado, the tornado departed as quickly as it had arrived, leaving Brian out in the open, his shelter and fire obliterated. Without the protection of the fire, mosquitoes find him once again and he lies sleepless for the remainder of the night, In the aftermath of the moose attack and the tornado he has little left. Nonetheless, Brian remains unfazed in his resolve to rebuild using the hatchet, his only remaining tool, still at his belt. Right before dawn Brian dozes off, awakening to assess the tornado's damage. Then he sees the plane poking out of the water and feels the need to say a few words in honor of the pilot

Chapter 13 and 14

While Brian tries to find foolbirds, as he calls to the chicken like birds he found. Brian's gut tells him that something is lurking close by. In the corner of his eye he spots a beautiful big wolf, it then walks away from Brian and up the hill, followed by 3 more. After the plane flys over him without seeing him Brian feels deeply defeated. With the feeling eating him up he even tries to commit suicide by cutting himself with his hatchet. When he lives on, he promises to never let death temp him again. At that moment he decides to transfer himself into the "new Brian". He finally discovers how to catch many fish in the lake when he realizes he must account for the  refraction of light underwater and readjust his aim. He catches many fish and feasts on them, happy with his achievement he feels he has hope. The thing is this hope makes him sad and he realizes that the chances of being found are slim. A skunk comes to search the spot in the sand where the turtle had laid its eggs. Brian yells at the skunk, which sprays him as a reaction. Nearly blinded for two hours as a result of the spray. Brian wanting to wash himself runs into the lake. The skunk had also eaten the eggs that Brian stored on the shore, because of this incident Brian learned two lessons: make a strong shelter and put food in its place where it is protected. Spending many days strengthening his shelter with additional wood and finding a high tree where the bears can't  reach and he could hide the food. But he still faces a lack of food problems. After brainstorming about the food problem here resolves to construct a small pond in which he may store the fish he has caught attracted by the remains of the fish he had already eaten. Brian demonstrates his planning but only finding food for the moment, but he's also filling some system of storage for the future.

Chapter 12 summary

Brian spends very long on his spear trying to make it as perfect as he can, but it fails to catch any fish. Brian needed a way to send the spear in the water, he decides that he can make a bow and arrow.  When he was spending time collecting wood, Brian nearly stepped on a bird and it flew up in a flurry of feathers. It hits Brian that he should try to catch the birds. They are a little smaller than chickens, which he calls "foolbirds". In that moment overhead flew a plane, it gave Brian hope that the searchers had come for him. Yelling at the top of his lungs, Brian falls into a deep pain and hopelessness once he sees the plane fly past him and away into the horizon. Brian begins to lose hope that he will ever see his friends and family again, and starts to feel profound emptiness and loneliness.

Chapter 11 summary

Brian engages himself in stacking wood, cleaning the camp, and sorting the eggs. He does this because it helps him from falling into a depression. He sees his reflection in the lake and notices the changes of his body. His skin had darkened and the extra weight had gone. However he also notices that the mental transformation has undergone. He observes his surroundings with a new wish. His senses sharpened to pick up on the events of the woods. His body and mind had made a connection that was not there before he got lost in the woods. Standing above a bluff overlooking the woods and lake the beauty of it overwhelms him. He soon realized that he can go fishing in the lake for food. Looking closer he notices multiple different kinds of fish. He tries to catch them with his bare hands but comes to a confusion that he is going to need some sort of fishing spear.

Chapter 10 summary

Brian feels such comfort from the fire he feels unwilling to stray from it. Knowing he will need to keep the fire going, he spends all afternoon gathering wood for that night and for a couple nights ahead. He goes back to his shelter and falls into a deep sleep after all of his work. In the middle of the night he is awakened from a sound, but when he looks nothing is there he then dozes off again. In the morning he sees tracks to and from the lake. So he follows them through the sand, and finds a pile of eggs, a turtle had laid its eggs there. It hits Brian that the eggs are a much better food than what he has been eating. He starts thinking of his uncle who ate raw eggs every morning, he decides that he needs the nutrients from the eggs. Getting over the odd taste Brian eats many of the eggs and saves the others for later. He starts to think of the searchers and hope that soon he will be rescued.

Art

There is no written language for Australian Aboriginal People so in order to convey their important cultural stories through the generations it is portrayed by symbols/icons through their artwork.

It is imperative to pass on information to preserve their culture. Indigenous art is centered on storytelling. It is used as a chronical to convey knowledge of the land, events and beliefs of the Aboriginal people.

The use of symbols is an alternate way of writing down stories of cultural significance, teaching survival and use of the land. The interpretations of the iconography differ depending on the audience.

Australian Aboriginal Art

Cave paintings, sand paintings and body paint were the original art to tell Australian Aboriginal tribal stories.  When these became available to viewers from the Western world, artists added layers of dots and crossh hatching to cover the sacred stories, hiding them from outsiders.

Search the internet for examples of Australian Aboriginal Art.  Select 3 you especially like.  Learn something you didn't know to put in a sentence for each of the 3 images.  Send your 3 to me.

For Wednesday art, find large flat rocks, flat dry driftwood, or brown paper bag.  You will paint your own Aboriginal Art on one if these.

Be amazed!

Chapter 9 summary

Brian was trying out different kinds of fuel for the sparks to ignite. He used things like grass, wood, and paper money. Finally he decides that the best thing to use is finely cut bark from a tree. He then finds out that he needs a more effective type of material. The fire is still drying after many efforts, and Brian gets very upset but perseveres. He thinks back to his science classes, and Brian recalls that fire needs air to grow. So he blows on it, and after rethinking the strength of his blows the sparks burst into a flame. He feeds the fire more and is relieved with his accomplishment. Then he considers the fire as a guard against other animals. All by himself in the middle of nowhere he cries from the feeling of joy coming from the fire longing to share it with someone else. Brian starts wondering what his parents are doing in that moment, he also wonders if his mother was with the man she kissed with the blond hair.

Our second project was something new to me, as well. Potato Croquettes, with Spanish Paprika. Creamy and fluffy inside, crispy fried outside. Making the batons, and then dipping and 'crumbing' them was a pretty fun and messy affair, but worth the effort. Next time maybe just a bit more pepper! Another fun day, Thanks to two willing Cooking experimenters!

Today we made roasted chicken, veggies, and potato tapas. They were all very good. Today's class was focused on time management and thinking ahead. In the class today Joy gave us a couple examples like she made the potatoes that morning so that they would still be warm and ready for us to work with them.

Chapter 7 and 8 summary

In the middle of the night Brain is awoken by a dream that is about his mother. Brain becomes sick from all of the berries he had eaten earlier. He then had a flashback to when he saw his mother kissing another man. Brain goes back to sleep when he wakes up that morning he goes to the lake and sees his reflection in the water and is thrown off guard from what he sees. After he sees his face he can't hold it in so he cries at the look of his face. The hunger then hit and it hit hard. He needed food so he ate the berries but made sure that he didn't eat too many. Because he couldn't eat too many berries he was still hungry so he searched for more food. While he was searching he found a raspberry patch where he saw a bear and was frozen with fear. Soon he realizes that the bear means no harm so Brain grabs lots of berries and heads back. With the bear still in mind he goes to sleep with his hatchet by his side. Brain woke up in the middle of the night to a porcupine in his shelter that then attacked him. Hundreds of porcupine quills go into his leg then he pulls them out one by one. He cries until he can cry no more, Brian dozes off and has a dream with his father and friend Terry in it. In the morning the sun comes up and shines on Brian's hatchet. Brian becomes determined to make a fire with his hatchet.
