Brian feels such comfort from the fire he feels unwilling to stray from it. Knowing he will need to keep the fire going, he spends all afternoon gathering wood for that night and for a couple nights ahead. He goes back to his shelter and falls into a deep sleep after all of his work. In the middle of the night he is awakened from a sound, but when he looks nothing is there he then dozes off again. In the morning he sees tracks to and from the lake. So he follows them through the sand, and finds a pile of eggs, a turtle had laid its eggs there. It hits Brian that the eggs are a much better food than what he has been eating. He starts thinking of his uncle who ate raw eggs every morning, he decides that he needs the nutrients from the eggs. Getting over the odd taste Brian eats many of the eggs and saves the others for later. He starts to think of the searchers and hope that soon he will be rescued.
