Chapter 12 summary

Brian spends very long on his spear trying to make it as perfect as he can, but it fails to catch any fish. Brian needed a way to send the spear in the water, he decides that he can make a bow and arrow.  When he was spending time collecting wood, Brian nearly stepped on a bird and it flew up in a flurry of feathers. It hits Brian that he should try to catch the birds. They are a little smaller than chickens, which he calls "foolbirds". In that moment overhead flew a plane, it gave Brian hope that the searchers had come for him. Yelling at the top of his lungs, Brian falls into a deep pain and hopelessness once he sees the plane fly past him and away into the horizon. Brian begins to lose hope that he will ever see his friends and family again, and starts to feel profound emptiness and loneliness.
