In the middle of the night Brain is awoken by a dream that is about his mother. Brain becomes sick from all of the berries he had eaten earlier. He then had a flashback to when he saw his mother kissing another man. Brain goes back to sleep when he wakes up that morning he goes to the lake and sees his reflection in the water and is thrown off guard from what he sees. After he sees his face he can't hold it in so he cries at the look of his face. The hunger then hit and it hit hard. He needed food so he ate the berries but made sure that he didn't eat too many. Because he couldn't eat too many berries he was still hungry so he searched for more food. While he was searching he found a raspberry patch where he saw a bear and was frozen with fear. Soon he realizes that the bear means no harm so Brain grabs lots of berries and heads back. With the bear still in mind he goes to sleep with his hatchet by his side. Brain woke up in the middle of the night to a porcupine in his shelter that then attacked him. Hundreds of porcupine quills go into his leg then he pulls them out one by one. He cries until he can cry no more, Brian dozes off and has a dream with his father and friend Terry in it. In the morning the sun comes up and shines on Brian's hatchet. Brian becomes determined to make a fire with his hatchet.
