Chapter 19 summary

Billy was out hunting and his dogs treed an animal about three times on the fourth time Billy realized that it was a mountain lion. His dogs and the lion got into a fight. They fought for a while and then Billy pulled Old Dan and Little Ann away. They were headed back home and Billy realized that Little Ann was following but not Old Dan. Billy went back for him and found him on his side. Billy wrapped him in a coat and took him home to heel him. Little Ann wasn't too hard to handle but Old Dan was injured badly. Billy and all of his sisters were so worried about him. He started talking to his mom and dad about how if it wasn't for the dogs Billy probably wouldn't be there, his parents asked him to explain. Billy went over to Old Dan and sat with him and then Old Dan closed his eyes forever. Billy went inside by the fire where he heard a noise he thought that his dog was still alive but it was just Little Ann. The next day he didn't eat breakfast. He started making a box out of wood corn shacks for Old Dan to be buried in. He went to the most beautiful spot that he could think of and buried him there. Because of Old Dan's death Little Ann became weak when she went to Old Dan's grave and died. Billy sat there not understanding why his dogs had to be taken from him when his mom came. She sat there with him until it was time for them to go back. When they were all sitting down for dinner Billy's dad made an announcement that once they moved to the town Billy would stay here with his grandpa. The next day Billy went and buried Little Ann right next to Old Dan.
