Billy's mom had made him a hat out of the coon he had got. Billy was hunting everyday, the only time he wouldn't go hunting it when the weather was bad. Just like every other Saturday Billy went to his grandfather's store and the hunters made fun of little Ann. Billy went out to hunt like usual but this time old Dan chased a coon into a muskrat hole. Then another time he was in an old dead holo tree.

S.S summary
Today we learned about how the barbarians divided the peninsula. The barbarians split the land in three ways. The south had the ships, the middle part was plain lands, and the north part was the cities. When the Romans left the bishops and priests took over their leadership responsibility. In the north there were prices for everything, even killing people.

Where the red fern grows chapter 9 summary
Billy was chopping all night long and just as he was about to give up his grandpa came. His grandpa explained to him that he can't chop anymore because he doesn't have the rest or food to do so. Billy's grandpa said well let's go back home for dinner. Then Billy reminded him about the raccoon, his grandpa assigned him some chores so they could make a scarecrow so the coon would stay in the tree. Billy went back home, ate dinner and went to bed. When he woke up for breakfast he heard barking and it sounded like old Dan. He ran outside and then he realized old Dan had run back to the tree to make sure the coon wouldn't leave. He decided to start chopping again and he did this for hours, and the same thing happened again he was so weak he couldn't chop anymore. He decided to pray and he asked god to give him the strength that he needed. Then soon after the wind blew and knocked the tree down and the pups killed the coon.
S.S. summary
Today we learned about how the barbarian tribes divided the peninsula. The Germanics raised cattle and sometimes would sell the meat but they mostly kept them for milk and other farmed goods. You would also be able to tell whose tribe leader was more powerful based on the clothes and accessories. The barbarians came with their tribes from the plain lands. The Romans didn't like the barbarians, they actually got their name from the Romans as an insult. The Romans didn't like them so much that even when the barbarians invented soap they wouldn't use it.
